Film Review

Although as visually lush as director Sofia Coppola's earlier film The Virgin Suicides (1999), The Beguiled is a lifeless drama that fails to deliver on its promise of being a first-rate thriller. It's an adaptation of a 1966 novel by Thomas P Cullinan and its 2nd remake to date (the 1st starring Clint Eastwood). The plot revolves around a group of girls & women vying for the affection of an injured Union soldier. But rather than the sort of femme fatales who seem in control, like Cruel Intentions or Dangerous Liasons-style Southern Gothic belles, their foolish play at coyishness becomes a vicious cycle that is predictable up until the very end. 2/5
